What happens when one of the biggest payment systems in Paypal goes down for maintenance?

Well, browsing to Paypal to make a payment to a client today I noticed that the site is “down for maintenance”. Paypal is the biggest payment processor on the internet today and when something that big goes down a lot of people notice.

Here is the exact message from the Paypal site:
“****Scheduled Maintenance Notification****

We are performing maintenance on the PayPal site from 11:00 PM to 12:00 AM PDT. The PayPal site and a majority of our features will be unavailable during that time.

We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your business. Once the maintenance has been completed we will return to normal functionality.

Thank you,

PayPal Operations”

No website can be up 100 percent of the time. But, when a site many people rely on goes down for maintenance or for any other reason it is a huge inconvenience. I am not sure how many people Paypal services in an hour but think about how much money they will be loosing because someone gets pissed off that the service isn’t available and uses another payment processor.

Has Paypal being down tonight affected you in any way?
